Is you line of Vetterblock exterior opaque stain (paint) available to the general public? I purchased a qt. of red from Waterloo Structures in Parkesburg, PA and it is outstanding
26 July 2010 - Downingtown PA

Dr. Joe's Reply   Unfortunately, it is only offered for sale to businesses for professional application in a factory setting. They will sell small quantities for touch-up purposes-perhaps they would be willing to sell you a larger quantity, if they had a desired color in stock.

Is there a paint that will work for the inside walls of a shower/bath? Our house is approx 60 years old, the shower stall is not a one-peice unit nor is it tiled. Instead, it is covered in about 4 large panel-type sheets that are siliconed together with some type of stripping/molding. It's working just fine and we have no problems, but the color is just awful. Can we paint it with any sort of paint that is water/mold resistant? Thanks!
15 July 2010 - lynchburg

Dr. Joe's Reply   Yes, a refinishing kit that will work on that surface is available, called "Bath, Sink, and Tile Refinishing Kit for Dummies"
It contains everything needed to refinish one average bath or shower area. It is an epoxy product, so it is extremely resistant to water and mold. It is a porcelain white color, or can be tinted to light pastel colors. It is a special order product, so please call or email if you would like us to order a kit for you.

What do I need to prime my truck to be painted ? It has a few minor rust spots
What products do you recommend ? Thanks
10 June 2010 - madison heights

Dr. Joe's Reply   If you are painting over bare metal, for instance, where you have sanded off the rust spots, we recommend PPG's OMNI MP170 epoxy primer, followed by MP282 SV, a high build primer surfacer, which then can be sanded to a smooth surface for application of the color coat. If you are not painting over bare metal, then the MP170 epoxy primer is not needed, and you can use just the MP282 SV High Build Primer Surfacer.

I have engraved the back of a chair and I need to ink fill, I tried spray paint but that seeps in the wood too much. I would like a nice glossy ink fill, what type of paint do you suggest?
4 June 2010 - Madison Heights, VA

Dr. Joe's Reply   Two possibilities come to mind. First, we have small containers of waterbase metallic colors from Modern Masters that could be applied with an artists brush to fill the engraving. There is a high gloss protective clear that could be applied as a final coat. Second, we have small containers of oilbase enamel from Rustoleum that may also work, available in many colors. They would also need to be applied with a small, artist type brush. It may require several applications to get the filled appearance that you are trying to achieve.

Please provide a recommendation for prep, prime and top coat of an old metal roof.
17 May 2010 - Gretna

Dr. Joe's Reply   Prep the roof by removing all dirt, mildew, and old loose paint, and as much rust as possible. Depending on the condition of the roof, scrubbing with a TSP solution may be sufficient, although a better prep is to use a pressure washer if possible.
If the metal is ferrous, prime with either an oilbase or waterbase primer. If the metal is aluminum or galvanized, the waterbase primer is preferable. Davis Paint 59 red oxide oilbase primer, or Davis Paint 1959 waterbase primer are recommended. Either primer may be topcoated with Davis Paint oilbase topcoats, or Davis Paint waterbase topcoats. A selection of standard colors in recommended roof paints are available in either system.
