I have engraved the back of a chair and I need to ink fill, I tried spray paint but that seeps in the wood too much. I would like a nice glossy ink fill, what type of paint do you suggest?

Dr. Joe's Reply
Two possibilities come to mind. First, we have small containers of waterbase metallic colors from Modern Masters that could be applied with an artists brush to fill the engraving. There is a high gloss protective clear that could be applied as a final coat. Second, we have small containers of oilbase enamel from Rustoleum that may also work, available in many colors. They would also need to be applied with a small, artist type brush. It may require several applications to get the filled appearance that you are trying to achieve.

Please provide a recommendation for prep, prime and top coat of an old metal roof.

- Gretna
Dr. Joe's Reply
Prep the roof by removing all dirt, mildew, and old loose paint, and as much rust as possible. Depending on the condition of the roof, scrubbing with a TSP solution may be sufficient, although a better prep is to use a pressure washer if possible.
If the metal is ferrous, prime with either an oilbase or waterbase primer. If the metal is aluminum or galvanized, the waterbase primer is preferable. Davis Paint 59 red oxide oilbase primer, or Davis Paint 1959 waterbase primer are recommended. Either primer may be topcoated with Davis Paint oilbase topcoats, or Davis Paint waterbase topcoats. A selection of standard colors in recommended roof paints are available in either system.

Is there a product at James T Davis that I can use to re-color OR re-finish a fiberglass bath tub? Basically change from gold to white.

Dr. Joe's Reply
We don't stock a product for that purpose, but it can be special ordered as a kit for a fiberglass tub.

I am building a desk for a paraplegic friend of mine and I am trying to get a special effect. I want the furniture grade plywood top to be a deep ebony black with traces of the wood grain. I have used a sanding sealer.
What type of paint should I use to spray the top? I was thinking good automotive with a clear coat.

Dr. Joe's Reply
An automotive refinish basecoat/clearcoat will give the appearance that you desire, especially with multiple coats of clear, lightly sanded in between.

Good Morning - we have a Star steel building being installed in the Bahamas, and have some areas that have been worn down on the primer and started rusting. We planned to wipe down with ospho or similar and touchup. The problem is we cannot get your exact paint down here. The product is:
14-R622 NCI Corrbar W/B Red Dip Primer.
What kind of primer can be applied over this, and do you have a color code for the product?
Thanks for any help!

Please give us a call at 434-522-3562, our factory customer service line, and we can arrange to ship a small quantity of the 14-R622 to you, which can be used for touch-up.
