New trends are on the horizon, and we’re ready for it. We believe 2019 is going to change the game for design and colors. Yes, we’re parting ways with some stunning fashions from last year, but this year holds ideas that are just as exciting and inspiring. At James T. Davis, we not only take note of what’s trending, but we also create a color palette compiled of rich colors we know you’ll love in the new year. Get to know the most-watched design trends and our picks for the 2019 colors of the year.
Design Trends to Watch For in 2019
Right now, 2019 is having a stunning moment. Often, the year before a new decade is a pinnacle one for fashion as it typically offers a glimpse of what’s to come for new design and decor trends. So though we may say goodbye to some beloved looks, keep in mind that there are plenty of new styles that may catch your eye in the new year. Here are the 2019 interior design trends to watch for this year and beyond, according to Elle Decor.
Decor Inspired by Natural Elements
If your design inspiration comes from the great outdoors, then you’re going to love 2019. In the past decade, we saw accent prints and textures coming from thick-lined, monochromatic geometric patterns like chevron stripes. But now, you’re going to be seeing decor pieces, wallpapers, and prints inspired by natural materials, colors and textures. Here’s what is being highlighted.
This was a big trend from late 2018 and will likely continue on in 2019. The marble look is going beyond the kitchen countertops and is being used to spice up decor items like coffee and end tables, serveware, lighting fixtures, small accent pieces, wallpapers, and fabric prints.
Brass accents are back, but they’re taking on their more natural form. Unlike trends in years past where metal was over-shined, home designers are opting for a more subdued, matte-finished look. They’re also choosing to use brass and copper items rather than steel or rose gold.
Whether you have a natural green thumb or prefer botanical-influenced styles, greenery is a must-have design element in 2019. We saw parts of this trend come to life with succulents, but now the trend will expand to plants of all sizes. On top of adding foliage to different nooks and crevices around your home, plant-inspired decor items such as wallpapers and fabrics will also be a hot trend.
We’ve seen a lot of wood-stained trends come and go, but natural wood is on the up and up. In 2019, expect to see darker woods swapped for lighter wood tones. This includes cabinetry, tables and floors.
Thoughtful Pieces with a Story
Over the past decade, we’ve seen a growing emphasis on decor items that reflect an individual’s values or purpose. This is partly due to the fact that consumerism is changing, as buyers are seeking to furnish their homes with more personal pieces that have a story behind them. In other words, you may be seeing decor pieces that are more curated in messaging and design rather than being generic.
New Take on Geometric Patterns
Geometric patterns have always been a consistent design element throughout the years, but what’s in always changes. This year will be no different. Instead of the two-toned, contrasting designs we’ve seen before, geometrics are planned to take an even bolder look than before, favoring more dramatic colors.
Boho Accents and Touches
It only makes sense that along with greenery trends, boho would make a comeback as well. However, it’s anticipated to have a cleaner look to it. So, along with the tie-dye-inspired fabrics and backdrops boho is so well known for, this time they will also have crisp, curved lines and brighter colors.
Florals Done in a New Way
This timeless pattern that was likely plastered on each wall of your grandma’s house is getting a modern makeover. Think bigger, extravagant florals in vibrant hues on wallpapers, curtains and furniture.
Our 2019 Colors of the YeaR
As design preferences change, so do color palettes. Every year at James T. Davis, we choose paint colors that channel new and upcoming styles, along with some secondary colors to match. But can we let you in on a little secret? There are a lot of great, trending colors this year. So much so, that we’re dedicating an entire palette board to it. Get to know each of our colors of the year as well as some recommended chic color and design pairing ideas.
0508 | Midnight Magic
Why We Love It: For a while, black paint has been outlawed in the interior design world, mainly due to the myth that darker paints make a room smaller or drab. But now, a lot of red tape is being removed from this bold paint color. As long as a room has plenty of natural sunlight, this once-taboo tip is an incredibly fashionable look.
Try it With This Design Trend: Black looks great with a high contrast design. Try mixing white color decor pieces or trim colors along with a pop of a vibrant color of your choice or stick to a monochromatic scheme, fluctuating between white and black shades.
Color Combo Ideas: For a bold, yet balanced effect, try Midnight Magic + Mineral Water.
0272 | Mineral Water
Why We Love It: This light color has such an elegant look to it, yet is versatile enough to be applied to any design motif. We’re also expecting to see more soft, warm-tones like this one popping up in this year’s color trends.
Try it With This Design Trend: If you are eyeing this as a potential color option for your home, try also incorporating an intriguing geometric pattern to go along with it.
Color Combo Ideas: Depending on what you gravitate toward, this color can either be paired with other blush tones or with vibrant colors. Try Mineral Water + Fair Maiden or Mineral Water + Atlantic Waves.
0157 | Dodge Pole
Why We Love It: Down-to-earth tones like this are getting a softer, pastel finish, which makes them a great choice to create an inviting and simultaneously calming environment. What we really love about this particular color is it evokes a southwestern feel and can be paired with some really fun, whimsical design elements.
Try it With This Design Trend: Try a Bohemian vibe with natural greenery. Or you can go true southwestern-inspired and pair it with vibrant decor items that have warmer shades of pink or turquoise.
Color Combo Ideas: We’re all about a Dodge Pole + Sauterne pairing.
0126 | Sauterne
Why We Love It: It’s like millennial pink, but with a softer look to it. Blush tones like Sauterne are already a big trend for the year, especially when it comes to paint colors. This color particularly has a delicate feel to it and is perfect for a bedroom or a bathroom.
Try it With This Design Trend: This color will shine with gold or brass metal accents and crisp white decor items.
Color Combo Ideas: Try this powerhouse duo, Sauterne + Midnight Magic. Or, lighten it up a little with Sauterne + Mineral Water
0456 | Fair Maiden
Why We Love It: It’s a touch of nature with a gorgeous mint hue. Another blush type tone, this color adds a reinvigorating statement and is perfect for a unique, creative workspace like an office.
Try it With This Design Trend: We think this color is perfect for a monochromatic scheme with some matching patterned elements like wallpapers or rugs.
Color Combo Ideas: Pair it with a deeper green to add some depth to the overall look. We love Fair Maiden + Atlantic Waves.
0912 | Tropical Dream
Why We Love It: Sometimes coffee just doesn’t energize you the way it should. You know what might do the trick? A lively color such as this one. This color is perfect if you’re wanting to brighten up your home in a fun way.
Try it With This Design Trend: This will look great as an accent wall along with some natural wood fixtures. Or go for a mid-century vibe, complete with reds and blues.
Color Combo Ideas: Get ready for a powerhouse quartet: Tropical Dream + Fair Maiden + Into the Stratosphere + Sari.
0473 | Atlantic Waves
Why We Love It: We’re all about this rich jewel tone. It’s similar to the hunter green shade that’s been trending as of late. But where it really shines is on walls, such as a living or dining room.
Try it With This Design Trend: Mix this with wooden fixtures and natural metal elements like copper. We also think this color is begging for an art deco wall art display.
Color Combo Ideas: Try something different with Atlantic Waves + Sauterne.
0573 | Chintz
Why We Love It: This intimate, inviting color will make every day feel like a fresh start. It’s ideal if you want a relaxing environment in a bedroom or bathroom.
Try it With This Design Trend: Textured looks are a great match for this color. Try chic marble fixtures or wallpaper to add a touch of elegance.
Color Combo Ideas: Pair this with a bold accent color to make an exciting duo, Chintz + Atlantic Waves or Chintz + Into the Stratosphere
0526 | Metropolis Mood
Why We Love It: What’s not to love about a cool gray with a touch of blue? This color can add a harmonious feel to your space and is great primary color if you’re not into white.
Try it With This Design Trend: Try it out with some subtle patterns, or with some bold colors.
Color Combo Ideas: We’re feeling this Metropolis Mood + Midnight Magic pairing.

1066 | Sari
Why We Love It: Playful colors such as this one are getting their much ado spotlight. Similar to Pantone’s Color of the Year, this color goes beyond just adding it to a girl’s bedroom (though we’re sure she would love it)! This year, go bold and add this to a living room or kitchen.
Try it With This Design Trend: Go with a geometric wallpaper or throw pillows along with various white accent pieces.
Color Combo Ideas: Go subtle with a Sari + Mineral Water combo, or go big with Sari + Atlantic Waves.
