If you think the holidays are all about multicolored lights or cheesy knick-knacks, think again. In fact, this time of year is a great time to test out some holiday decor aesthetics that could set the tone for your home year-round.
Here, we’ve compiled a few aesthetic examples to act as inspiration, and hopefully serve as the launching point for your home’s design in 2019.
Traditional and Classic
There’s something to be said for a postcard style holiday. If you find yourself watching It’s a Wonderful Life on repeat and taking notes on the beautiful garland, bells in the trees and abundant candlelight, a traditional and classic design style may be for you.
A traditional and classic color scheme is all about reds, greens and golds. Before you start cringing over the thought of putting such bold colors together, there are ways to meld them together with style.
Choose one color as the base color for your holiday decor (we prefer red!) and then use greens and golds as accent colors.
Traditional and classic holiday decor is less about the small accent pieces and more about the items that act as centerpieces in your home. Heavy garland, velvet ribbon and natural accents pulled from the outdoors are your friend with this style of decor.
If you have stair railings, an entryway in your home or even an open accent table that’s up for grabs, use garland, ribbon and pine cones to create a look that draws the eye.
Simple and Minimalistic
Simple and minimalistic holiday decor isn’t about being lazy and not decorating—it’s about finding a perfectly curated collection of decor items that are understated but, when paired together are chic and intentional. If your home leans more toward mid-century or Scandinavian style, simple and minimalistic may be for you.
A simple and minimalistic holiday is all about leveraging the natural and abundant beauty of nature. Look for accents that make you feel like you’re taking a walk through the forest—natural wood colors, rich greens or understated grey tones. Here, minimalism relies less on material accents and more on highlighting the beauty that already exists in an item.
A simple and minimalistic style is your opportunity to forage for your holiday decor. If you have woods around your home, or access to an area where you have permission to find greenery, look for pine cuttings, pine cones, birch branches or running cedar to add as natural accents to your home. (Tip: Always make sure you have permission to forage around the area, and do not take more than you need in order to protect the environment around you.)
From there, seek out decor accents that rely heavily on highlighting the natural material they’re made from. Brown wrapping paper, wooden beads for garland or natural colored metals make great accents.
Cozy and Warm
If your favorite part of the holidays is cozying up under a blanket, hot chocolate in hand while watching the parade or reading a book, a cozy and warm holiday aesthetic may be for you. Here, the design style relies on elements that exude comfort—thick blankets, hand knitted or quilted stockings, abundant candles.
Your focus with a cozy and warm aesthetic is relaxation. So rather than choosing bold colors like reds, golds, silvers or greens, you’ll want to opt for colors that are muted and calm. Opt for whites, greys, blacks or even more muted versions of red and green to create your ideal environment.
A way to create an instant feeling of comfort is to incorporate mixed materials and different textures—especially from textiles. Rather than opting for a traditional table runner for your dinner table, instead use a cozy blanket or a heavier material from the fabric store. Choose stockings that are thick, knitted or quilted and give off a handmade feel.
