Redesigning or renovating a room may seem overwhelming at first. You are faced with many choices: What colors should you use? What kind of paint is best? Should you have an accent wall? What about new furniture? and what about all of the other accessories?
The good news is that putting together a design plan doesn’t have to be a chore. At James T. Davis, we have trained professional designers available to help you with a free consultation every day. They would be happy to help you create the room of your dreams. To get the most out of your free consultation, here are some things to do before meeting with one of our designers:
Determine Your Goals
With so many details to consider, it can be easy to become distracted during the design process. But looking at bathtubs when you wish to remodel a kitchen isn’t going to get you anywhere. Make sure you go into the redesign process with a clear goal in focus. Whether your goal is to update a room with a coat of paint or to completely renovate a section of your home, our designers can help you stay on track.
Analyze Your Room
There are several factors to consider when designing a room. Here are a few questions to ask:
- How much light does the room receive, do you need to add accent lighting? This factor can make colors appear either lighter or darker than they truly are as well as influence decisions.
- What is the main purpose of this room, is the room a high traffic area? If the walls are constantly being touched, or you have small children, you may want to consider paint that is easily cleaned.
- Do you want to paint all of the walls one color or do you want an accent wall? This decision can be determined at the design consultation, but consider which wall would make the best accent wall.
Prepare a Mood Board
Using a tool such as Pinterest to compile ideas and inspiration that speak to you makes it easy to share with your design consultant what types of styles and colors inspire you. Start with a generic search such as “dining room” to get a broad spectrum of ideas and styles. Once you have discovered the style you are like—think traditional , modern, or eclectic —, you can search for specifics such as “traditional breakfast nook,” “farmhouse dining table,” or “dining room chandeliers” to hone in on your style preferences even more. At your consultation, share this board with your designer to help them fully understand your likes and dislikes.
As part of your mood board search, consider adding a few color palettes that you enjoy. If you are overwhelmed with the amount of color options that exist, start with our Color Wizard to determine what palette works with your vision. Once you have a few options picked out, you can try them on using our Room Visualizer. Once you have selected a primary color, our designers can help you build a custom palette coordinated to that color and designed to suit the purpose of your space.
Once you have “The Big Picture” for your room, you can focus more on the fine details. James T. Davis can assist with this aspect of a renovation as well. Our show room has a large selection of furniture, home decor, window treatments, custom drapery options, and much more to help complete your space. Our designers can help you find just the right pieces to perfectly complete the room you have envisioned.
You don’t have to take on a design project alone. Our designers are available every day, with no appointment necessary. Once your consultation is over, you can even take home some of our paint to try on your walls. We look forward to seeing you soon and helping make your home design dreams a reality !
