Have you ever gone stargazing in a place far away from any nearby cities and light pollution? The sky is a beautiful dark blue—not quite black—and you can see more stars than you ever thought possible. It’s a peaceful feeling that reminds us of how beautiful our world is if we take the time to enjoy it.
That’s the feeling you can get from our Color of the Year, Into the Stratosphere. It’s a night sky color that, while dark, also has dreamy qualities and conveys a feeling of boundless possibility. Night is also a time of rest and relaxation when everything settles down, and for many it brings inspiration and creativity.
Paint the Beauty of the Night Sky
When thinking about repainting your home, your first thought may not be to paint it a dark color. But just as with one of our other Colors of the Year, Midnight Magic, there is a lot to be gained from doing just that. The darker aesthetic is light absorptive and moody and can seem to expand a space. It also throws into sharp relief anything that is light in color and adds a touch of basic elegance to any place where it is present.
This is a good color to use for a contrast effect, just as the light of the moon and stars gleam against the night and make us wonder. Into the Stratosphere will pair well with many brighter and bolder colors, such as white, pale yellow or gold, terra cotta, coral, golden yellow and silver. When you paint these colors together, they give off a vibe of comfort and sophistication that will keep you and your guests coming back for more.
Where to Paint It
There are many places where you can paint Into the Stratosphere. As blue is a primary color and not particularly vivid or bold, it will look much more subdued and serene. You can try painting your dining room, bathroom or powder room in this color to make these areas seem to expand and feel more peaceful, elegant or classy. A home theater or entertainment room will also thrive with this color, as a TV or other sources of bright light will show up better visually.
You can also paint Into the Stratosphere as an accent wall to give a touch of contrast, or in a hallway to give a sense of openness and transition into a space where a different color is present. And don’t forget to match your other decor with this color to complete the aesthetic and create a cohesive environment!
